Meet the Commanders


Steven King – Commander

Commander Steven King is a native of the great state of Ohio, and grew up in the town of Fredericksburg. He has been involved in the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church, Boy Scout Troop 2069 as both a Scout and an Assistant Scoutmaster, an outdoor education camp counselor, and a mentor for middle school students within the Akron Community. He graduated in 2013 from Waynedale High School in Apple Creek, Ohio. After High School he started college at Wayne Community College in Orrville, Ohio. After his sophomore year he enlisted in the Ohio National Guard as an Infantryman (11b). He is currently pursuing  an Integrated Social Studies Major, History as a Second Major, and a Military Science Minor (ROTC). Commander King will commission as an Officer in the United States Army shortly after graduation here at The University of Akron in the Spring of 2018.

Commander King enjoys time in the outdoors backpacking, specifically in Utah, Colorado, New Hampshire, among other places. When he isn’t out in the woods, in class, or at the shooting range, he is spending time with his family in Fredericksburg.

Commander King’s future plans include commissioning as an Officer in the Active Duty Army as an Infantryman (11a). From there he will go to Ranger School and be assigned to a line unit.  


Christopher D. Catalano – 1st Vice Commander

Chris grew up in a military family, his Late father (David) serving 20 years in the U.S. Navy as an Aerographer’s Mate By age 5 he had already lived overseas (Sigonella Sicily). He spent most of his Childhood growing up in Waukegan Illinois. After his Father’s Retirement in 1992, the Family eventually moved “home “ to the greater Akron area CHris Attended Stow- Munroe Falls High School and was heavily involved with the Air Force Auxiliary, Civil-Air-Patrol.

Chris Graduated in 2000, and Enlisted in the US Army CORPS of Engineers in FEB, 2001 Attending OSUT Basic Training in FT. Leonardwood, MO and Earning the title of Combat Engineer MOS-12B with a B6 Identifier. His First DUty Station was with 16th ENGR BN, in Giessen Germany. A month after arriving, the Attacks in New York on 9-11-2001 kicked off Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Chris Deployed with his Unit early 2003 to the OIF theater. 2004 saw Chris PCS to FT. Hood ,TX with 299th ENGR BN. In 2005 Chris underwent his greatest transition, as he ETS’d from Active Duty, going from “Single Soldier” to a “Single Father” with Sole custody within a single year. His Son Cymon .Born in August. Chris has a cumulative of 6 years in the Army Reserve and currently Serves As a Team Chief with 350th TPOC, having re-classed in 2016, earning the MOS-37F Psychological Operations Specialist.

Chris and his son, currently reside in Cuyahoga Falls Ohio. they are both heavily involved in the Boy Scouts, and study martial arts.

Chris is a Senior at the University of Akron, Studying Sales with an emphasis in Entrepreneurship. Chris is a former President of the Zips Rifle Club, and competes as a competitive shooter. Chris is also involved in the Smuckers Leadership Institute and the Student Speaking Association. In addition to serving as our post’s 1st Vice, Chris also serves the Veteran’s Community on campus as a Peer Advisor in Veterans Education.(PAVE).

Chris is Projected to Graduate in May of 2018 with a Bachelor of Sales Management(Honors), Entrepreneurship Minor. Chris is looking forward to continuing to build his DIrect Sales Businesses, as a Life Coach he helps people maximise their potential through a systematic approach.


Daryll Mauder – 2nd Vice Commander

Daryll Mauder was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He grew up in Florida and Ohio for most of his childhood. Vice Commander Mauder joined the United States Navy in 2000 and served honorably until he was medically discharged in 2005. He is married with four children; one boy that is fourteen years of age and three girls that are nine, five, and two. Vice Commander Mauder is in the fourth year of his program at the University of Akron. He will graduate with a  Computer Information Systems degree. Daryll’s overarching goal is to work at the VA in the IT department. He enjoys watching sports with his children as well as traveling with them throughout the United States. He really enjoys helping other Veterans and wants to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. One of  Vice Commander Mauder’s major goals is to start his own 5013c to help Veterans in his community.



Jay Musson – Adjutant & Finance Officer

He is a Vietnam Combat Infantry veteran and a University of Akron Alumni graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. He retired from the Veterans Administration at Wade Park in 2014 where he was the Fiscal Officer of the Medical Research Department.
